"Alle kunst is in zekere mate schatplichtig aan andere beelden. Het concept van de authentieke vervalsing heb ik aan het eind van de jaren zeventig - toen ik pas begon te schilderen - intuïtief bedacht als een uitweg uit het geconstateerde debacle van de uniciteit. Het gaf me de mogelijkheid terug te gaan in de tijd, bestaande beelden opnieuw te gebruiken en op die manier authentieke vervreemdingseffecten te creëren. Geleidelijk aan heb ik die methode gerationaliseerd en verfijnd. Ik probeer beelden te herinterpreteren en er een gezond wantrouwen tegen te creëren, waardoor mijn schilderijen automatisch ambigu zijn." (Luc Tuymans)
